How does the microgrid operate?

With the transformation of energy structure and the wide application of renewable energy, microgrid, as a new energy management mode, is gradually becoming an important part of power system. Microgrid refers to a small power network composed of distributed energy, energy storage system, load and monitoring system. It can be connected to the main power grid or operated independently when necessary to realize local production and consumption of energy.

First, the basic composition of microgrid

A typical microgrid usually includes the following key parts:

1. Distributed energy sources: such as solar photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, diesel generators, fuel cells, etc., are the main energy sources of microgrid.
2. Energy storage system: such as lithium battery and super capacitor, which is used to balance supply and demand and improve the stability and flexibility of the system.
3. Load management system: responsible for intelligent dispatching and control of electrical equipment to optimize energy consumption.
4. Control system: It includes energy management system (EMS) and protection control system, which is used to monitor, adjust and protect the operation of internal equipment in the microgrid.
5. Power conversion and distribution equipment: such as inverters and transformers, to ensure power matching between different energy sources and loads.

Second, the operation mode of microgrid

Microgrid mainly has two operation modes:

1. Grid-connected operation mode: In this mode, the microgrid is connected with the traditional main grid, which can realize the bidirectional flow of energy. When the local power generation is insufficient, electricity is purchased from the main power grid; When the local power generation is surplus, the surplus electric energy can be fed back to the main power grid.

2. Islanding operation mode: When the main power grid fails or needs independent operation (such as remote areas or emergencies), the microgrid can disconnect from the main power grid and rely on the local distributed energy and energy storage system to supply power to the load, thus ensuring the continuity and reliability of power supply.

Switching between these two modes is usually completed automatically by the intelligent control system according to the power grid state, load demand and energy supply.

Third, the advantages of microgrid

1. Improve energy efficiency: Microgrid reduces the loss caused by long-distance transmission by generating and using electricity locally.
2. Enhance the reliability of power supply: it can still maintain basic power supply when the main power grid fails, especially suitable for key facilities such as hospitals and schools.
3. Promote the development of green energy: Microgrid can effectively integrate renewable energy such as solar energy and wind energy, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
4. Reduce electricity cost: Through energy storage and load management, energy can be stored when the electricity price is low and released when the electricity price is high, thus realizing economic operation.

Fourth, the application prospect

At present, microgrid has been widely used in urban communities, industrial parks, islands and remote rural areas. In the future, with the development of smart grid and Internet of Things technology, microgrid will further evolve in the direction of intelligence and digitalization, and become an important support for building a new power system.
