How to charge the transformer of electric vehicle quickly

With the promotion of global environmental awareness and the rapid development of new energy technologies, electric vehicles (EV) have become an important direction of future transportation. As an important factor affecting the popularity of electric vehicles, charging efficiency has always been the focus of industry research. Among them, the electric vehicle transformer is a key component in the charging system, and its performance is directly related to the realization of fast charging technology.

First, the basic principle of fast charging technology

The so-called "fast charge" refers to the technology of charging a large amount of electric energy into the battery of an electric vehicle in a short time, which can usually be charged to 80% in 30 minutes. The key to fast charging is to increase the charging power. At present, the mainstream fast charging power has reached 120kW to 350kW. The improvement of charging power requires the transformer to have higher voltage conversion efficiency, stronger thermal management and higher safety.

Second, the role of electric vehicle transformer in fast charging

Transformer is mainly responsible for converting high-voltage alternating current of power grid into low-voltage direct current suitable for battery charging in the charging system of electric vehicle (through rectifier cooperation). In the DC fast charging pile, although the on-board transformer does not participate in the DC charging process, the transformer in the off-board charging equipment plays a vital role, and it must:

1. Efficient voltage conversion: keep stable output under high power charging;
2. Isolation of high-voltage system: to ensure the safety of users and equipment;
3. Adapt to high-frequency operation: In order to reduce the volume and weight, modern fast-charging transformers mostly adopt high-frequency design;
4. Good heat dissipation ability: to prevent temperature rise caused by high power.

Third, the development of transformer technology supporting fast charging

In order to meet the demand of fast charging, transformer technology is developing in the following directions:

1. Adopt new materials: such as nanocrystalline alloy, amorphous alloy and other high magnetic permeability materials to improve magnetic permeability and reduce energy loss.
2. High-frequency design: The high-frequency transformer can significantly reduce the volume and weight, and at the same time improve the response speed to adapt to the rapidly changing charging load.
3. Integrated and modular structure: easy to maintain and upgrade, and improve the stability of the whole system.
4. Intelligent control technology: Through linkage with BMS (Battery Management System), dynamic adjustment of charging process is realized, and energy efficiency and safety are improved.

IV. Challenges and future development

Although rapid charging technology and transformer design have made great progress, they still face many challenges, such as high temperature problems, power system load pressure, battery life loss and so on. In addition, the different charging protocols of different brands of electric vehicles also restrict the universality of fast charging equipment.

Looking forward to the future, the application of solid state transformers and wide band gap semiconductor devices (such as SiC and GaN) will bring new breakthroughs to the fast charging system. These technologies are expected to further improve the charging efficiency, shorten the charging time and reduce the overall cost of the system.
